The Graduate School of the Humanities Pledge

The Graduate School of the Humanities approaches detailed studies with a broad view of all areas of humanities, promotes education and research activities to meet the various needs of society, and strives to be a place of knowledge where students can discover, nurture, and realize, as in Yamaguchi University’s motto.

Our graduate school is designed to seek and organise fundamental knowledge in liberal arts relating to human beings and their cultures. We strive to nurture a corps of professionals who devote themselves to deeply understanding their specialized fields, and who inquire into the basic principles of human cultures and their development in various ways.

Our Graduate School of the Humanities has five courses: Philosophy and Thought, History, Contemporary Social Studies, Japanese and Chinese Language and Literature, and European and American Language and Literature. Students investigate the idiosyncrasies as well as universality of human cultures in various regions of the world and in Japan. We develop high level, specialist professionals who contribute to society through our nurturing of their abilities to analyze and explain individual societies and their cultures, and to analyze and understand language and literature historically and socially.

Our graduate school covers many diverse areas within the specialism of humanities. We consider it is of utmost importance for all of our students to think and understand through their own initiative. We welcome students full of freshness and ambition by preparing small classes which encourage discussion.

The Graduate School of the Humanities makes efforts to nurture high level specialist professionals by encouraging deeper research into specialist fields while keeping the whole breadth of humanities in mind. In order to achieve this, we strive to nurture a corps of professionals who devote themselves to deepening understanding in each of the Philosophy and Thought, History, Contemporary Social Studies, Japanese and Chinese Language and Literature, and European and American Language and Literature and who inquire into the basic principles of human cultures and their development in various ways.

Requirements for enrollment to Graduate School of the Humanities

≪Major in Humanities≫

1. Persons who have knowledge equivalent to a master’s degree in the field they major in
2. Persons who want to investigate more deeply the peculiarity and universality of human cultures in various regions of the world
3. Persons who want to delve into their studies from a wide perspective and develop them logically in each of the fields of Philosophy and Thought, History, Contemporary Social Studies, Japanese and Chinese Language and Literature, and European and American Language and Literature.
4. Persons who can explain their research themes effectively both orally or in writing
5. Persons who have a will to contribute to society as high level specialist professionals by acquiring advanced knowledge and skills of analysis and judgement as well as research achievements.
